Because there are no long wire runs, solar powered garden lights are less prone to circuit problems that plague a typical landscape lighting environment. And speaking of environment, the new designs are built to withstand years of UV torture.

Since we’re dealing with electronics, there are a few things to consider when making a selection. Solar lights are pretty simple, actually. During daylight hours, when the sun is out, the solar cell converts light into a charge and recharges a battery. Most of these units use your typical AA rechargeable battery. Next, the actual light is a light emitting diode, or LED which uses very little energy. A regular light bulb converts about 5% of the energy it uses into light, whereas an LED converts about 83%.
Low end manufacturers will use inferior and cheaper materials to save money. Many solar powered garden lights are made with a cheaper solar panel and a small, blueish LED. Given a full day of sun, the light may work well into the night. But on a normal day with clouds, this set up will not work long. It is OK for a walkway or garden, but only for a few limited hours. The higher quality is definitely worth the investment as the solar panels are bigger, higher quality, and typically come with a backup battery. There are even some units sold today that give off enough light at night to read by on your patio.
Finally, there are so many uses for solar powered garden lights. Sure you can use them for lighting, but today you can find solar power for water pumps for fountains, underwater lighting for ponds, and decorative lighting throughout your favorite plants. It takes a little research to find the best options that will work for you. Remember to look for quality and you will end up with solar powered garden lights you can enjoy for a long time.
